High Quality Bits
Leigh Brand carbide-tipped router bits are among the best you can buy. They are made with high quality C2 and C3 micro grain carbide for long bit life. Each bit is honed to a fine edge with 600 grit diamond wheels for smooth, efficient routing. All shanks are 1-3/4" long to handle the thickness of the finger assembly or accessory template. Leigh router bits are manufactured to ISO 9002 standards.
Shank Size
The R9 Plus is shipped with an 8mm shank dovetail bit (80-8) and a 1/2" shank straight bit (160). The 8mm shank bit requires a 1/2" collet router with a 1/2" to 8mm collet reducer (172-8), included with the jig. Five optional bits (70-8, 75-8, 140-8, 170 and 170C) also have 8mm shanks.
Two optional straight bits, 166 (166C) 3/16" bit and 173C (173-500) 3/8" bit are required for box joints on the R9 Plus.
The 166 (166C) 3/16" bit requires a router with a 1/4" collet.
The 173C 3/8" bit requires a router with a 1/2" collet and a 1/2" - 3/8" collet reducer (172-375), as shown under the R9 Plus Bit Selection chart below.
The 173-500 3/8" bit requires a router with a 1/2" collet but does not require a reducer as it has a 1/2” shank.
Through Dovetail & Box Joint Bit Selection
The R9 Plus uses 8° dovetail bits for through dovetail tails and one of two straight bits for pins. The dovetail bit's working depth (see column B in the R9 Plus Bit Selection Chart below) must be equal to or slightly greater than the thickness of the pin board or drawer front. Always choose the smallest dovetail bit (column A) relative to the pin board thickness for that look of hand-cut elegance. Use the matching straight bit and template guidebush indicated in the chart.
